Warm

warm we link arms before the brawl breaks our ranks
we touch again ineffectual fist to ineffectual face
we are touched again to be peeled apart sprayed
toward sobbing and held again in rapturous pain do you remember
now singing by torchlight? do you remember the strange sounds
of which we are capable? the moan the mutter
the laugh around campfire and when campfires tamp
and glow and our bodies just cool of a blister
kind and momentary sister to sister
brother to brother all else like a staircase rises up
or helps us descend in time
it is a struggle to keep cool to fight with
one's own fire the necessary stoke and recoil.

“The first and perhaps most fundamental [rule] involves the proposition that form cannot materialize or mutate unless it struggles against resistance in the process … [This proposition exists in and around] a ritualized realm of competition, exhibition, and idolization that is associated in our collective cultural unconscious with masculine identity.” Nancy Spector

“I lie out / dragging myself forward with bear-knives in my fists.” Galway Kinnell

      i begin to the next
groan

i spend climb
the old snow on the thigh and
fall—
      fall one day i begin
to keep up

at
        night
reappear

       blows
     of
        bear-transcendence
     the fairway i
begin to hunt him down as i knew
   i would
        and which i lurch

the word "hunt" appears precisely
no time in Gallway Kinnell's
poem

no
mattering wonder old snow the bear him
and digest of the wind

       at
the
      flyway

in her ravine
in
the bear's
blood the world

at
dismayal
   i awaken
i
          tottering wonder
old snow the dismayed

   i awaken a third
i
       begin toward winter and
    gnash it up
splash on think
      must rise
come to the trail behind
        me
and down
          my nostrils

          flared

and which
       way to
   begin the seventh day

To Hackensack

will you jump on my trampoline?
The lights have sparrows and
among us knew many boys
a half dozen? said she was

A crow alike at the phone; it's full
the dog refuses, we're out of
phones; it's full of lights here's a snake origami,
your will jumps on our fathers

Pressed pants and held
us our mothers pressed porn
we knew many like her, loved
them even, but who among us knew

many boys
a half dozen?
she was retired, hare
and crow calls alike

At the phone; it's full
the dog refuses,
we're out of phone
and full of lights

here's a snake
Your will jumps
on our fathers
Pressed pants

We knew many like her, loved
even But whom among us knew

she was a retired porn star.
